The conversation was struck over brandy and cigars following our meal. Olivia and the ladies went through, leaving us to discuss business. After a brief discussion of our recent fortunes, I posed a question to the group.

“Gentlemen,” I began, “I hoped to trouble you all with a delicate matter I have stumbled upon in the months since we have taken residence within these walls. Jaime is already aware of some of this, but I shall begin fresh for you, Jack, and you, Grayson.”

“Certainly,” Grayson answered.

“I must ask before I begin that this discussion remain in confidence. Though rumors will abound despite my best efforts, what I am about to reveal I ask you do not reveal to anyone outside of your circle.”

“That sounds ominous,” Jack answered me.

“Indeed,” Jaime said as he refilled our brandies. “It may, in fact, send you fleeing from this castle if you are faint of heart.”

Jack raised his eyebrows at Jaime’s admission. He turned his attention to me. “Now, I am more than curious.”

“As am I. Proceed, old friend,” Grayson imparted.

“Thank you, gentlemen. Since we arrived, we have been party to strange occurrences.”

“Even prior to your arrival,” Jaime interjected. “From the onset of the property acquisition through the building if we are to present all the facts.”

“Quite right,” I agreed. “As we surveyed the property, an old woman insisted the land was cursed and would bring nothing but woe to my family should I build here.”

“Certainly, you did not believe her?” Grayson questioned.

“We would not be sitting in this castle if I had. Though I have often wondered if the woman may have been correct.”

“What has happened to make you wonder that?” Jack asked.

“Many things.” I retrieved my first journal from the buffet where I had placed it earlier and waved it in the air.

“Douglas has kept a record of the happenings,” Jaime informed them.

“It began with small occurrences. A misplaced item, a missing thing. Vases moving across the room, papers appearing and disappearing from different spots.”

“Vases floating across the room?” Jack inquired.

“No,” I corrected. “The vase would be positioned here.” I motioned with my hand at a vase on our buffet. “In the next instance, here.” I motioned to a spot across the room. “In the time between which I had spotted it there, no one had entered the room, yet the same vase had moved there.”

“I see,” Jack said as he leaned back in his chair, his finger rubbing his chin in thought.

“What else?” Grayson prompted.

“You suspect more?” I inquired.

“You did not ask for our discretion over a transient vase,” Grayson said.

“Clever,” Jaime replied.

“Indeed,” I answered. “And the reason I asked for his input.” I swallowed another gulp of brandy before imparting more of my story. “The next incident would go beyond a transient vase, as you put it, Grayson. As I roamed the halls late one night, the sound of music reached my ears. I followed it to its source. My ballroom. As I approached, the sounds of a lively party emanated from behind the closed doors.
